Abstract While most discussions of housing in the UK tend to focus on national or regional scales, level diversity within regions means that measuring trends at neighbourhood is vital for a more complete understanding how markets and conditions are changing. Using small area data also enables identification hot spots changing demand as well charting changes composition stock neighbourhoods. This paper makes use new dataset, developed part PopChange project, which analysis population change using Census neighbourhoods across England since 1971. The reveal considerable neighbourhood-level throughout this period. Notable identified include marked increase overcrowding outer London over period 1971–2011, decrease number rooms per person much wider south east between 2001 2011, large increases average household size parts London, Birmingham, Bradford, Oldham. Administrative 2015 2017 allow post 2011 perspective dwellings person. When measured terms person, space increased everywhere except but there variation all contain with declining numbers
